Have they already happening? Are they happening as we speak? It’s me, your resident apolitical American idiot, here to make sense of the heavy at the core of Arming Main Street Radio’s latest episode – What Are Reparations & Who Should Pay For Them?
I’ll be honest. I don’t have much of an opinion on reparations. In fact, being an average white dude, I’m not sure I’m supposed to. But (most) everyone can agree that (most) everyone has feelings – even if they shouldn’t all be weighed equally when it comes to deciding policy – so I’m willing to hear anyone out. After all, what the hell is the point of pirate radio, if not to amplify the voices we’re not supposed to hear? And, in this era of corporations and media and government being owned by a couple of rich motherfuckers, we all know whose voices those are: ours.
Which is where we come in. Arming Main Street Radio is an average show for average folks where ordinary hosts have extraordinary conversations. It’s a podcast about nothing, because nothing is everything, and everything is everything. Lost yet? Us too. Big picture is, we’re normal people, just like you, trying to discover the truth behind the bullshit we’re fed daily. And, turns out, it’s almost always been in front of us the whole time.
Take reparations. To many, it’s a serious, lofty political goal. To many more, it’s a pipe dream, a buzzword with the power to elevate conversations and/or end political careers. And, to some, it’s none of our business. But, aside from being another talking point used by the higher ups to divide us, what are reparations really?
1.) Reparations really just means paying back what was taken, which, in the case of black Americans, means 400 years worth of land, labor, wages, and lives. But it’s not just about slavery – if you’re a white dude who dumped your life savings into a Ponzi scheme, you might go to a court looking for restitution, too. And if you’re a Native American – well never mind. Genocide aside, you probably don’t have much faith in due process these days, anyway.
2.) Reparations have happened before – sort of. 40 acres and a mule was a well-documented shit show, Japanese Americans got some cash-in-hand for our WWII-era concentration camps, and reparations is a hot topic in Haiti, too. Just not in the way you’d think.
3.) Reparations will happen again. Are happening, arguably. Just not in the way you’d think. Despite valid arguments for and against, the most likely endgame for reparations (read: a righting of all the system’s wrongs) is the one we’ve already seen, are seeing, and hopefully will continue to – and it starts with you.
